I am just starting a project to define salamander species assemblages in different drainages here at the Ouachita Mountains Biological Station (OMBS) in Arkansas. There are a number of disjunct populations of salamanders as well as several endemic species in the Ouachita Mountains. OMBS has many streams with Plethodon, Desmognathus and Eurycea species, but there is one small isolated pool in an abandoned slate excavation site that holds Ambystoma maculatum. I plan to use GIS and spatial modeling to investigate the influence of environmental variables on the distribution of the salamanders.
